The groups vary greatly in size, the way they operate and the activities they undertake - some groups are just a single individual, while others have hundreds of members. The Batch Payments system reduces overheads in the supply chain and improves communication between suppliers and their customers worldwide. It was created by the Booksellers Association of the UK and Ireland in 2000 to replace the manual clearing house scheme. The BATC was founded in 1949 with the aim then, as now, to encourage and co-ordinate the activities of amateurs involved in all aspects of television as a hobby.

The BATC organises and co-ordinates a number of activity days for ATV operators throughout the year.
